Hardscaping

The stone that gives a yard its shape

Hardscaping is everything in a landscape that is not growing: paths, paver aprons, courtyard floors, pool surrounds, steps, edging and the level changes between them. It is the part that decides how a yard is used, because it is where people walk, sit and stand.

It is also the part that shows every shortcut. Stone set straight onto North Texas clay looks perfect for a season and then rocks, sinks and separates as the ground swells and shrinks. We build the base first, every time, and the finish is the last thing that happens.

Got a path, patio floor or pool surround in mind? Call us and we will price it properly.

What counts as hardscaping?

Anything solid. Stepping stone paths and full walkways. Paver aprons and courtyard floors. Pool copings and surrounds. Garden steps and level changes. Border edging that keeps mulch out of the lawn and lawn out of the beds. Even the strip of stone along a fence that gives water somewhere to run. Individually they look like details, but together they are the structure the planting and the lawn sit inside, which is why they belong in the same plan as the rest of our landscaping work rather than being added later.

Why does stonework fail in North Texas soil?

Because black clay is not a stable thing to build on. It swells when it takes water and shrinks hard when it dries out, and over a Texas year it does both dramatically. Anything bedded straight onto it moves with it, which is how paths end up rocking and pavers end up with lipped edges.

Water is the driver, and the Texas Water Development Board documents just how sharp the wet and dry swings are here. The answer is a compacted stone base of the right depth, proper edge restraint, and falls that get water off the surface rather than under it.

Where does hardscaping become an outdoor room?

The moment the floor is big enough to furnish. A path is circulation, a courtyard floor is a room, and the difference is mostly proportion: enough space for a table and chairs with room to walk behind them, plus something overhead to make it usable in July. Once you are at that scale, shade structures, fireplaces and level changes come into the conversation and the project turns into an outdoor living space. That is where our outdoor room builds pick the job up.

What works around a pool?

Around water the priorities change. The surface has to stay cooler underfoot than a plain slab in full sun, it has to be safe when it is wet, and it has to deal with splash out without turning the surrounding ground to mush. Coping edges need to be level and true because everybody looks straight down them. We set pool surrounds on a base that drains, run the falls away from the deck, and detail the join into turf or planting so there is no soft strip collecting water at the edge.

How deep does the base under paving need to be?

It depends on the soil and what the surface has to carry. Foot traffic needs less than a driveway. We check the ground on site and build the depth the job actually needs.

Can you match stone I already have?

We will get as close as the material allows. Natural stone varies batch to batch, so we show you options on site against what is there before anything is ordered.

Do stepping stones work in a turf lawn?

Very well, and it is one of our most common details. The stones are bedded to sit flush with the turf so nothing catches underfoot and the mower never has to go near them.

How do you stop weeds coming up through paving?

The base, the edge restraint and the jointing do it. Weeds in paving are almost always growing in debris that has collected in the joints, not pushing up from below.

Will hardscaping make my drainage worse?

Not if it is planned. Every hard surface has to send water somewhere, so we set the falls and the outlet as part of the design rather than dealing with it afterwards.

Do you do commercial hardscaping?

Yes. Courtyards, walkways and paved outdoor areas for restaurants, offices and apartment communities are the same work at a heavier specification, built for constant foot traffic and phased so the site keeps operating.
