Gravel Driveway Installation in Richardson, TX

Gravel is the cheapest hard surface there is, and the easiest to get wrong. Without a compacted sub base and a firm edge, the stone ruts, migrates and vanishes into the clay.

Gravel driveway installation

Stone that stays where it is put

Most failed gravel is the same story. Somebody tipped a load of pea gravel onto bare ground, and within a season it had rutted under the tyres, wandered into the lawn and sunk into the clay underneath. What was cheap became a recurring cost.

Built properly it is a genuinely good surface: it drains better than anything solid, it is easy to repair, and it costs a fraction of paving. It just has to be built in layers, on prepared ground, inside a real edge.

What goes under a gravel drive?

The same thing that goes under any surface that has to carry weight: prepared, compacted ground. We strip the topsoil and the soft material off, because organic soil never stops settling, then build back in layers. A coarse, angular sub base goes down first and gets compacted, and only then does the finer running surface go over it. Angular stone locks together and stays put, while rounded pea gravel rolls under a tire no matter how much of it you buy. It is the same principle behind everything our paving contractor crew builds, just with a different finish on top.

How do you stop gravel spreading into the yard?

You give it a wall to lean on. Every gravel surface needs a hard edge on both sides, whether that is a paver or stone border, a timber or steel edging, or the face of an existing slab. Without one the stone simply migrates outward under traffic, and a year later it is in the lawn and the drive is thin down the middle.

Runoff is the other consideration. A gravel surface soaks up rain rather than shedding it, which is why the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality treats permeable surfaces as part of managing stormwater. It is a real advantage in clay soil, provided the water has somewhere to go once it is through.

Can gravel be used for drainage rather than driving?

Very often, and it is some of the most useful work we do. A gravel strip along a fence line, around the base of a wall or between a lawn and a building gives water a place to soak away instead of sitting against something it will damage. It also solves the strip of ground that stays permanently damp and bare no matter what gets planted in it. Those borders are usually part of a larger job, and where they run alongside a hard surface they get set out with the same care as our paver and slab work.

How much upkeep does gravel need?

Some, and it is honest to say so. Stone gets pushed to the sides over time, low spots collect water, and every few years a drive wants raking level and topping up. That is far less work than resurfacing something solid, and the repair is a couple of hours rather than a project. The better the base and the edging, the less often it comes around. What we will not do is promise a gravel drive is maintenance free, because no gravel drive is.

Straight answers about artificial turf in North Texas

What kind of gravel is best for a driveway?

Angular crushed stone, not rounded pea gravel. Angular pieces lock together under weight and stay in place, while rounded stone rolls out from under a tire and migrates constantly.

How thick does a gravel drive need to be?

It is built in layers rather than one depth, with a coarse compacted sub base under a finer running surface. How thick depends on the ground and the weight it has to carry.

Will a gravel drive turn to mud in a wet spring?

Not if the sub base was built and the topsoil was stripped. Mud means the stone is sitting on clay and mixing into it, which is exactly what the preparation stage is there to prevent.

Can gravel go over an existing dirt drive?

Only after the soft material comes off. Tipping stone onto dirt is the most common way gravel drives fail, because the stone disappears into the ground within a season or two.

Do I need edging on both sides?

Yes, wherever there is nothing solid to hold it. Edge restraint is what stops stone creeping into the lawn and keeps the running surface thick where the wheels actually go.

Can you use gravel just as a border?

Often, and it is a good use for it. A gravel strip along a fence, a wall base or a damp side yard gives water somewhere to drain and fixes ground that will not grow anything.
