Turf for playgrounds
A play area that is clean and open all year
Anywhere kids play the same game in the same spot, grass gives up. Under a swing set, at the bottom of a slide, in front of a goal, along a bike loop. Within a season those become bare dirt in summer and mud in spring, and the mud comes indoors.
Playground turf fixes the surface instead of fighting it. It is soft under a fall, level so nobody trips, and free draining so kids can be back on it soon after a storm. We build them in family back yards, in shared courtyards and at commercial properties across the Dallas metro.
Tell us the equipment you have and the ages using it, and we will come and measure it.
Why does grass fail under play equipment?
Because play concentrates. A swing set puts every landing in the same two foot strip, a slide exit takes a hundred impacts a week, and a goal mouth gets the same feet every afternoon. Grass needs recovery time it never gets, and North Texas black clay compacts so hard under that traffic that even reseeding will not take. Turf simply takes the wear and stays the same shape. The surface build is the part that matters, and it is the same groundwork discipline our Richardson turf crew brings to every lawn we lay.
Is playground turf soft enough to fall on?
That depends entirely on what goes under it. Turf laid straight onto a compacted base is fine for a flat play lawn, but under equipment with real fall height it needs a cushioned layer beneath the surface. We spec that layer to the height children can fall from, not to a square footage price.
The federal Consumer Product Safety Commission publishes the public playground safety guidance that sets out how fall zones and surfacing are supposed to work. We build home and shared play areas with that thinking rather than guessing at it.

That is the normal starting point, and it is a good one. A yard that is already stripped back to soil saves a demolition stage. We take out the loose material and any leftover roots, cut the levels, build a stone base and set the drainage falls, then lay the play surface on top. What was the worst part of the yard usually ends up the part that gets used most. If the whole lawn has gone the same way rather than just the play zone, that is a turf replacement job and we would look at the yard as one piece.
How do you keep a play surface clean?
Rinse it and brush it. A hose clears dust, pollen and spills, and a stiff brush lifts the fibres back up in the landing zones so they do not lie flat and slick. Leaves and bark get blown off before they break down into the pile. Because the base drains, nothing sits underneath and nothing sours. There is no lawn treatment, no fertiliser and no weed spray anywhere near where children are playing, which for a lot of parents is the whole argument on its own.

Straight answers about artificial turf in North Texas
Is playground turf safe for toddlers?
Yes, with the right build. Younger children get a softer, shorter pile and a cushioned layer underneath, and no coarse infill. We ask the ages before we spec it rather than after.
Does play turf get hot in summer?
In full afternoon sun it warms up like any outdoor surface. Shade over the play area helps a lot, and a quick rinse cools it fast. Morning and evening play is not affected.
Can turf go around an existing swing set?
It can. We work around the posts and cut the surface tight to them, or lift and reset the equipment if that gives a cleaner finish. Either way the fall zone gets the right build underneath.
What happens to spills, food and pets on a play area?
It rinses off. The surface drains through to an open stone base, so liquid does not pool and nothing is absorbed. A hose and a brush handle the weekly clean up in a few minutes.
Do you install play surfaces for schools or apartments?
Yes, along with childcare centers and shared courtyards. Those get a heavier specification for constant use, and we phase the work so part of the space stays open where we can.
How big does a play area need to be?
Big enough to cover the fall zone around the equipment, plus room to run. We measure the equipment, mark the zones on site, and show you the shape before anything is ordered.
